You have a one-in-five chance of being involved in a violent act at work. Violence ranges from being struck to being raped or killed. People who kill their coworkers make headlines, but fistfights are far more common in the workplace. So what can you do to avoid violence? Here are some tips:
• People sometimes get angry. When you get angry in return, it creates the potential for violence. Tell the person that you want to solve the problem and that anger won't help. Walk away from the person if necessary.
• If a coworker threatens you with violence, notify your supervisor. You're not in school anymore and there is no need to tolerate a bully. Coworkers who threaten violence can be fired.
• Violence sometimes occurs because a worker has mental or emotional problems. You might notice signs of this. A person who is a "loner" and who completely withdraws from other workers is exhibiting unusual behavior. Possibly this person lets stress build up and doesn't express it. Other workers might appear to always be angry; they might verbally or physically strike out at everyone. Still others might have mental illness such as paranoia. Talk with your supervisor when you observe strange behaviors like these.
• Violence often occurs due to marital disputes that spill over into the workplace. Don't hesitate to call the police when a spouse who should not be there enters the workplace or grounds.
• Follow all security procedures to protect yourself and coworkers. Keep doors locked, don't allow strangers into a building, and report suspicious behavior.
• Working in places open to the public - such as convenience stores - requires special security guidelines. Every retail chain has security guidelines. You should take time to learn the guidelines and follow them for your own safety and that of your coworkers.
Not all violence can be prevented, but following some simple guidelines can reduce it. Carefully observe your surroundings and people in the workplace. Report unusual situations to your supervisor or security guards.
